Health and well being

Indulge healthily this summer

Ice-creams, bbq’s and frappuccinos – all delicious and summery, yet not necessarily healthy. Here are some food options to enhance your nutrition this summer.

What’s the biggest excitement before reaching your holiday destination? Finding out what aeroplane food you will be tucking into. Picnics and pack lunches are the way forward.

Instead of tucking into handfuls of sandwiches and crisps, take the opportunity to find some healthier alternatives . My favourite is a piece of crusty bread, slightly drizzled in olive oil and served with hummus.

Olives, vegetable skewers, dips and sushi, make for a refreshing meal. If you do fancy something like cheese or chocolate, take a small piece but be sure to eat far more of the good stuff.

Yes – fruit should be eaten throughout every season, but doesn’t it look even better when it’s hot?

I love to go more exotic and opp for fruits like mango, pineapple and passion fruit. Be sure to include in your morning breakfast, smoothie or as a dessert platter in the evening.

If you are getting bored with just plain water, instead of relying on ice-cubes, add some frozen fruit. Frozen strawberries are my favourite and when in water, I drink far more than usual. I know you can buy flavoured water, in my opinion however, it tastes better when made at home – if it’s frozen – it will be more chilling.

Now, for anyone with a sweet tooth. This is the ultimate – don’t feel guilty dessert: A banana boat.

Slice a banana in half, spread your choice of nut butter (I went for natural peanut butter) and add some nuts on top (I chopped pistachio). Cook in the oven for around 7 minutes. (I did 7 – you can bbq or grill). When ready, sprinkle with desiccated coconut and berries, melt 1 square of dark chocolate on top and wala! Some of my fruit was frozen so it melted into a nice sauce.Β If you are vegan, you can swap the chocolate for honey, or simply leave this step out.

Experiment with fruit desserts this summer and try to cut down on your refined sugar.

Raw desserts

Cold, delicious and appetising. Raw desserts generally consist of a nut base, with a mix of dried fruit and fresh.

Most of you might be aware of protein balls – where you mix protein with medjool dates, oats and almond milk etc, mix into balls and let set in the fridge. I recently tried tahini truffles.

Using this recipe from – I devoured these. What’s great about desserts with a high content of seeds or nuts, is that they are super filling. I couldn’t even more than 2 of these at the same time.

So, you’re probably wondering how salads are indulgent? If you find yours are not quite filling or tasty enough, don’t be afraid to mix in some carbs.

A section of cold pasta, new baby potatoes, coleslaw or even some french bread. To keep it being body friendly, be sure to feature a wide variety of veg. Pumpkin seeds are a wonderful source of practically everything – zinc, magnesium, protein etc. You can toast these lightly to add a kick to your lunch.

What healthy food do you like to tuck into, in summer?

  1. I have never tried protein balls but I really want to since everyone is hyping over them!! You are so right that even if it’s summer you should eat and remain healthy, and since it’s hot I (at least) don’t even feel like eating something greasy like chips.. I am craving fruits and berries all the time!! 😍

    • They are amazing. They way I make them, they at first look all gooey and not appetising, but once you put them in the fridge to set for a few hours, they come out perfect. There is no right or wrong way to make them.
Yes, I love chips in the winter, but with summer it doesn’t feel right. I am looking forward to more smoothie drinking. Thank you for reading!!

  2. I LOVE ❀ salads, fruit, and smoothies in the summer! The hot weather motivates me to eat healthier because greasy, unhealthy, or fattening foods are too heavy and unappealing to me in the summer, so it's great! This was a really nice post, and the banana boat idea is spectacular! I have to try that sometime soon πŸ™‚

    • Thank you!! I love banana boats. There is really no right or wrong way to make them. My favourite dessert is actually grilled bananas on the bbq with caramel and ice-cream. The recipe I showed though is just a much healthier version and yet it still feels indulgent.
It’s great about the summer motivation right. Only issue is doing cardio in the heat. Thank you for reading. xxx

    • I was actually contemplating whether to do a post about salads, but I don’t know if I have enough ideas to make it interesting. Pumpkin seeds are so healthy and perfect to sprinkle over the top. I highly recommend!

    • Im not the biggest fan of watermelon – although I wish I was because it looks so amazing to eat! I might try giving it another go this summer because I haven’t eaten it in many years. πŸ™‚
