We are all photographers now; at least our amateur selves convince us of this, as we snap selfies, blog photos and any view we see, that we deem as potential for a good upload.
Shehan Fernando is a talented photographer, who has a keen eye for detail. He boasts a 21.2k following on Instagram. If you’re not a photographer (maybe you are) and you want more knowledge on how to shoot work that looks professional, this interview is for you.
How long have you been a photographer and what made you want to become one?
“I have been shooting people for 3 years now. I wanted to become a photographer, mainly when I saw the work of photographers like Ryan Brenizer, Cliff Mautner and Chase Jarvis. I thought their work was cool and they inspired me”.
In your opinion, what is the best camera that an amateur can buy, to take good photos?
“I would say the Nikon D700 with a 50mm lens to shoot portraits. But if you enjoy taking pictures as a hobby with a variety of subjects, the Nikon D3400 with a 18-105 lens would be a good choice”.
How can people improve their images? Do you have any good tips?
“Learn the basics of photography; how to expose and compose an image. Don’t be afraid to try new ideas that you may have”.
How long does it take you to edit a photo? Are there any good editing apps that people should be aware of?
“Editing time depends. It could take up to 30 minutes to edit an image. RNI films is a good app to edit and also VSCO is really good too”.
What is the number 1 mistake people make, when capturing photos?
“Choosing the right background. This is so important as it could take away the attention from the main subject. I mainly shoot in location and I have made a lot of mistakes in the past”.
How important is lighting?
“Lighting is so important in photography. Knowing how to shoot in different conditions and control the light, will give you some amazing results”.
What can a model do, to create a good shoot?
“Confidence is the most important thing and this shows in the image. Generally, when the model is comfortable and confident, the images are great”.
For someone who doesn’t have a professional camera, is there anything that they can do, to take better quality phone images?
“Yes. Phones these days are quite good. If you have a decent phone with good storage and apps like RNI Films and VSCO, you should be able to get some good results. There are also adapters that you can buy for phones, to take close up shots”.
